Diamonds were believed to have been found in India 3000 years ago and were worn as adornments for their reflective qualities. Thought to represent purity originally, Diamonds now represent true love that lasts forever making them the most sought after gemstone for engagement rings. When perfectly and precisely cut, diamonds reflect light back in a unique sparkling manner and it is this dazzle attract people to the gorgeous stone.

A Diamond’s suitability is determined by the 4 C’s – Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat

• Cut: This refers to the way the faces of the diamond are cut to be geometrically in proportion to one another. The more precise and intricate the cut, the more brilliantly the diamond will shine.
• Colour: The more colourless a diamond, the greater its value due to its rarity. Most diamonds contain small increments of colours containing slight traces of yellow, brown or grey. In rare cases they can occur on pink, blue, green and red. These fancy colours increases the value of these diamonds.
• Clarity: Almost all diamonds contain small imperfections. A “flawless” diamond contains no imperfections when under 10 times magnification. The less flawed a diamond the higher its rarity and the greater its value.
• Carat: A “carat” is a measurement of a diamond’s weight. While a larger diamond is worth more than a smaller one containing the same qualities, size is almost meaningless unless one considers cut, clarity and colour. If containing similar properties large stones are more valuable as they are rarer than small diamonds.

Gold is one of the most popular and one of the oldest precious metals since the beginning of recorded time due to its colour and durability. Adored since the days of the Ancient Egyptians gold is still one of the most loved metals used in jewellery creation.

Pure gold (24 carats) is too soft for creating jewellery and is hardened using certain alloys. The more alloys the less pure the gold and this is where the carat differentiation comes in. The higher the carat the more valuable the gold due to the higher percentage of gold.

This exquisite African gemstone was discovered in the 1960’s and can only be found near Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. This gem is 1000 times more rare than a diamond and once polished and cut this stone dazzles with sparkling blue and violet hues. Because colours vary so vastly, finding 2 matching stones is extremely rare and sought after.

Tsavourite is found in Kenya and Tanzania and was discovered in the Tsavo National Park in Kenya in 1967. The rich and intense colour of the flawless Tsavorite make it one of the most beautiful gemstones.

As natural pearls are so rare to find in nature almost all pearls sold today are cultured. This means that a bead is implanted into the oyster so that over time the oyster will coat the bead in mineral and protein layers. Layers are referred to as nacre, which give pearls their magnificent lustre or shine. The larger the pearl, the more lustre it will show.

Most pearls are white, cream, yellow, pink, silver or black however, they can have overtones which reflect under light. The size of a pearl depends on the kind of pearl that it is. Freshwater pearls range in size from about 3.0-13.0mm, cultured pearls range from about 3.0-8.5mm, and South Sea and Tahitian pearls can reach sizes as large as 13mm. The smoother a pearl the more rare and then more valuable it is. The most sought after shape for a pearl is round, the more symmetrical a pearl, the greater its value
